所有格

比如“你做完功課了嗎？”，不能說“Have you done homework?”，而應是“Have you done your homework?” ，因為表示做功課要用do one's homework。“那些是我們老師的一些書”，不能說“Those are some books of our teacher”，正確的是“Those are some books of our teacher's”，這里應用雙重所有格形式。“這是我弟弟約翰的書”，不能說“This is my brother John book”，而要說“This is my brother John's book”，John是brother的同位語，John的書要用John's book。

不定式

“為了準時，我們加快了步伐”，不能說 “So as to be in time we hurried”，要說 “In order to be in time we hurried”，因為so as to只可放在句中，in order to可放在句首或句中。“你說這些話真傻”，不能說 “It's very foolish for you to say so”，要說 “It's very foolish of you to say so”，表示評價的形容詞被帶邏輯主語的不定式修飾時，介詞要用of。“你沒有告訴他們永遠不要做那件事嗎？”，不能說 “Didn't you ask them to never do that”，要說 “Didn't you ask them never to do that”，never要放在to之前。

副詞

“這塊石頭太大了沒人能舉起它”，不能說 “Here is a so big stone that no one can lift it”，要說 “Here is so big a stone that no one can lift it”，so是副詞，修飾形容詞，形式是so + 形容詞 + a + 單數可數名詞。“這花多美啊！”，不能說 “What beautiful the flower is!”，要說 “How beautiful the flower is!”，how用來修飾副詞或形容詞，而what用來修飾名詞。

分詞

“他理發了”，不能說 “He had his hair to be cut”，要說 “He had his hair cut”，have，get + 賓語 + 過去分詞表示使…被。“他喜歡喝涼開水”，不能說 “He likes to drink boiling water”，要說 “He likes to drink boiled water”，現在分詞表示主動，boiling water指正在沸騰的水；過去分詞表示完成，boiled water指沸騰過的水。

虛擬語氣

“我要是你，我不會那么做”，不能說 “I shouldn't do that if I was you”，要說 “I shouldn't do that if I were you”，表示與現在事實相反的虛擬語氣不能用was，只能用were。“要是我父親現在在這里，他會告訴我該做什么”，不能說 “If my father were here now, he will tell me what to do”，要說 “If my father were here now, he would tell me what to do”，表示與現在事實相反的虛擬語氣中，主句的助動詞只能用would，might等過去時。

介詞

“瓊斯先生住在皇后街十號”，不能說 “Mr. Jones lives on 10 Queen Street”，要說 “Mr. Jones lives at 10 Queen Street”，at + 門牌號，on + 街道名稱；兩者同時出現以門牌號碼為準。“他喜歡在太陽下坐著”，不能說 “He likes to sit under the sun”，要說 “He likes to sit in the sun”，在太陽下用介詞in。

被動語態

“他們結婚兩年了”，不能說 “They have married for two years”，要說 “They have been married for two years”，表示已婚狀態的持續，要用完成時的被動式。“他被所有學生嘲笑”，不能說 “He was laughed by all the pupils”，要說 “He was laughed at by all the pupils”，不及物動詞 + 介詞 = 及物動詞，變被動語態時介詞不能省略。

助動詞

“我習慣于早起”，不能說 “I am used to get up early”，要說 “I am used to getting up early”，get，become或be used to中的to是介詞，后接動名詞。“他過去常常在星期天來約我”，不能說 “He used to calling on me on Sundays”，要說 “He used to call on me on Sundays”，used to + 原形動詞，表示過去常常。
